AC Milan, alongside PUMA, have unveiled their 2026/27 home kit, and it’s less about reinventing the wheel and more about reminding everyone why the wheel looked so good in the first place. This is classic Milan through and through: bold, confident, and instantly recognisable.

There’s a very fine line between tradition and progression when it comes to home shirt design in particular. There’s no mistaking AC Milan’s new home shirt for what it is, but does it stand out even amongst the AC Milan repertoire from years gone by? Will you look back in 10 years time and be able to identify this kit for the season it relates to? It is traditional and safe – it doesn’t take any risks – and this is mirrored in the launch imagery. Shot on a bland beige background, it doesn’t do anything to pull up trees. What it does do, in a very flat way, is keep focus on the shirt.

So for the design, front and centre – literally – are those famous red and black stripes. Thick, unapologetically bold bands running clean across both the front and back of the shirt. No gimmicks, no over-designing, no messing around. Just pure Rossoneri identity. A definite tick in the box of tradition and identity.

And that’s kind of the point here, as AC Milan’s Chief Revenue Officer Maikel Oettle puts it, “These stripes don’t tell a story. They are the story.” It’s a strong line, but it fits. When you’ve got a visual identity this iconic, you don’t need to dress it up.

Rather than chasing trends or experimenting with modern twists, they’ve leaned fully into Milan’s heritage. As Maria Kiebacher from PUMA explains, “When something is this embedded in football culture, it doesn’t need reinvention. It needs to be honoured.

That pretty much sums it up. Sometimes the best design decision is knowing when not to overdesign. Safe? Yes. Iconic? Can’t really argue. Ultimately, it’s hard not to respect a kit that knows exactly what it is, even if it’s not the most exciting.
