Newcastle Launch 2019/20 Home Shirt From PUMA

As seems to be the trend these days with new kits, PUMA have looked to the past for inspiration for the Newcastle United 2019/20 home shirt, with the design paying tribute to the 50th anniversary of the club’s Inter-Cities Fairs Cup win.

50 years ago, a 3-2 win away in Hungary gave Newcastle a 6-2 aggregate victory over Újpest Dósza in the two-legged final of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, marking the first of two European trophies in the club’s history. Yes, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup was a real thing. And yes, Újpest Dósza is a real team. In a nice nod to past achievements, the Newcastle 2019/20 home shirt pays homage to that memorable moment from the club’s history.

Alright, so Geordies will be quick to point out that the only detail that’s been carried across from the 1969 shirt in ‘tribute’ is the black and white trimmed round neck, but aside from grievances regarding the inspiration for the shirt, this is a damn fine effort from PUMA. Let’s just not talk about the sponsor logo though, OK?

The shirt design expands Newcastle's iconic black and white stripes, leaving just five across the front, with a central black stripe being flanked by white for a satisfyingly symmetrical style. The PUMA logo and club crest take up monochromatic look in a central position on this black stripe, furthering the symmetry and boosting the aesthetics in a move that’s not been seen so much in recent years. ‘NUFC’ appears below the collar on the rear of the neck, while the sleeves are solid black. The kit will again feature black shorts, while traditional black and white turnover socks – as worn by the 1969 side – also make a return.
