Nike Launch a Gold Mercurial Superfly 1 RGN To Celebrate CR7's World Cup Record

While the Goat debate rages on and the battle for the all-time World Cup goalscorer heats up, Cristiano Ronaldo has quietly gone about becoming the only player to score at six separate World Cup tournaments, and to honour that incredible feat, Nike have released a special Gold Mercurial Superfly RGN.

Cristiano Ronaldo just keeps rewriting the rules, doesn’t he? With his two goals against Uzbekistan, he’s become the only player ever to score in six separate World Cup tournaments – a ridiculous stat that feels very “CR7”. And now, Nike have stepped in to celebrate the moment in style, dropping a seriously eye-catching tribute: the Mercurial Superfly 1 RGN Gold edition.

What makes this drop hit a little harder is the timing. This is Ronaldo’s first signature Nike boot since the 2022 World Cup, ending a three-year wait for a personalised CR7 release. For a player so closely tied to the Mercurial line, that gap felt unusually long. So this isn’t just another flashy colourway, rather it feels like a proper return.

The upper comes dressed in a rich metallic gold finish, giving the whole boot that unmistakable “main character” energy that Ronaldo is all about. It’s not loud for the sake of it, it’s bold with purpose. Layered into that upper is Flywire technology, a subtle but meaningful callback to the original construction of the 2009 model, reinforcing the nostalgic angle.

Cutting across all that gold is a clean white Swoosh, big and unapologetic. It’s a simple feature, but it does a lot of heavy lifting visually. The contrast makes the design pop, giving the boot a sharp, premium feel rather than letting it drift into over-the-top territory.

There are smaller details that seal the deal too. Around the heel, you’ll find “CR7 Mercurial” branding, which confirms this as a true signature release rather than just a themed drop.

Underfoot, Nike have paired the upper with a modern Mercurial Vapor 16 soleplate. That means cutting-edge performance wrapped in a heritage-inspired shell. And in classic Ronaldo fashion, it’s finished with a metallic gold chrome effect, so even the underside of the boot demands attention when it catches the light.

The official colourway, “Mtlc Gold Star / White”, tells you everything you need to know. This isn’t a subtle release, and it was never meant to be, but then Ronaldo doesn’t do subtle, does he?  The gold dominates, the white accents sharpen it up, and the whole package feels like a celebration rather than just a product.

More than anything, though, this boot is about legacy. Ronaldo becoming the only player to score in six different World Cups isn’t just another stat, it’s a reflection of longevity, discipline, and an almost unmatched level of consistency. These boots tap into that story. By referencing the Superfly 1, Nike are essentially connecting a young, explosive Ronaldo with the icon he is today. Different eras, same relentless drive.

The Nike Mercurial Superfly 1 RGN Gold ends up being exactly what you’d want from a CR7 tribute. It balances nostalgia with innovation, makes a statement without feeling chaotic, and, most importantly, feels earned.

Gold suits Ronaldo. It always has.

The Nike Mercurial Superfly CR7 RGN "Gold" will be available from prodirectsport.com/soccer on 24 June (8am PT/11am ET/4pm BST).
