There’s something beautiful about Jordan’s latest collaboration in football. Let’s face it, the Jumpman could pretty much have the pick of Nike teams from across the world as a follow up to their work with PSG. But rather than go for one of the more obvious candidates, instead they’ve gone a lot more leftfield, and I love it.

We all know how the story went. Jordan brand made their explosive entry into football with Paris Sant-Germain back in 2018, creating one of the most influential crossovers the sport has ever seen and at the same time arguably altering modern football culture as we know it.

Following the expiration of the exclusivity deal with PSG at the end of 2022 there was speculation about which club would be next to receive the premium treatment. Could it be Italian giants Inter? Or was there a more natural fit with Barcelona through Michael Jordan’s appearance at the 1992 Olympics? Well, neither have come to pass (yet – never say never), but instead Jordan have made waves with the second team to ever rep the Jumpman on a professional football pitch, with Swedish side Bromma getting the honour.

For those of you not instantly familiar, Brommapojkarna, or Bromma for short, or BP for even shorter, is one of the biggest club’s in the world, with around 4000 players registered. OK, so most of them are youth players (approx 95%), but that structure has helped the club to garner a reputation as something of a launch pad for Swedish talent. Add to that the fact that they are the biggest home for girls football on the continent and you start to get more of an idea of their impact on the game. Think along the lines of Victor Gyokores, Dejan Kulusevski, Lucas Bergvall, Amanda and Matilda Nilden and you get a taste of the type of players that Bromma churns out.

And ultimately, it was this reputation as a launch pad that really led to the literal badge of honour that is the Jumpman appearing on their new special edition kits. See, Jordan Brand has always sold the idea of aspiration – the pursuit of excellence. It was a mantra upon which an empire was built, with the brand’s namesake sitting at the top as the absolute epitome of it. It’s about the belief that greatness can come from unlikely places, and in many ways, Brommapojkarna embody those same principles. The Swedish side isn’t defined by silverware or superstar signings. It’s a club defined by opportunity, development and the ability to help young players take flight. And so the connection between a club known for launching careers and a brand built on Air Jordan symbolism feels almost too perfect. Launch pad, air, flight, Jumpman. The parallels write themselves.

Importantly, this isn’t the beginning of a long-term Jordan football dynasty in the mould of PSG. From all indications, this is a one-off collaboration, a special moment designed to celebrate the club and its contribution to the game, and that temporary nature arguably makes it even more appealing. For me, the best football shirts are often the ones tied to a specific story and a specific moment in time.

As for the kit itself, the shirt arrives in a bold red base complemented by black and white detailing, immediately evoking the unmistakable colours associated with the Chicago Bulls era that helped build Michael Jordan's global legend. It’s a colour palette that feels both familiar and fitting, bridging the gap between basketball heritage and football culture.

There are also some subtle design choices that reinforce the uniqueness of the collaboration. Defying convention, the Jumpman logo sits proudly on the left side of the chest, while the club crest switches to the right (a move rarely seen, but oddly enough that featured on Napoli’s third shirt this season). Across the front, traditional sponsorship branding is replaced by a striking "BP" graphic, with Jordan wording positioned above it. A classic fold-over collar and clean cuff detailing round everything off nicely, giving the shirt an aesthetic that manages to feel contemporary while retaining a touch of retro charm.

The goalkeeper version follows the same template but flips the colours entirely. A predominantly black base is paired with red and white accents, creating an inverted look that arguably has more of a streetwear edge. Together, the pair form one of the most distinctive football kit releases of the year. And they don't come alone, either. As well as the kits, Bromma got a full Jordan gameday wardrobe.

Seeing the Jumpman appear on a second professional football shirt is exciting enough. Seeing it appear on Brommapojkarna's shirt feels genuinely refreshing. In an era where commercial decisions are so often dictated by reach, revenue and social media metrics, this feels like a partnership built around recognising a club's contribution to the sport itself, and I’d personally love to see more of it.

Rather than becoming a logo reserved exclusively for football's superclubs, perhaps Jordan could evolve into something closer to a badge of honour. A mark awarded to clubs that do things differently, that invest in communities, champion development, or leave a lasting impact beyond results and trophies.

If that's the direction they're heading, Bromma feels like the perfect place to start. After all, if any football club has earned its wings, it's this one.
