On the day that Cristiano Ronaldo picked up his consecutive FIFA Best Player Award, the ever-efficient Nike PR powerhouse had its wheels in motion. CR7's latest signature Air Max sneaker dropped on the day he wore them to be crowned the greatest player on the planet in front of the world's media.

With the Nike Air Max 97 was released, Ronaldo wore them with an all black outfit to arrive at the ceremony in London, before suiting up for the trophy presentation. Nike don't miss a trick when it comes to timing; CR7 always debuts a new boot in a big game, and now he's debuting a new sneaker on a big night. Slightly surprised he didn't pick up the award in just the trainers and a pair of CR7 pants.

The inspiration behind the sneaker is as follows: As a young boy, Cristiano Ronaldo was limited to just two pairs of shoes – one for playing football in, and one for wearing to school. As the story goes, his school shoes were well kept, but his football shoes always ended up with holes due to the endless amount of time he spent playing the game. Each time he'd get a new hole in his shoes, his mother would patch them up.

Patched up and dipped in gold, the new Air Max 97 CR7 takes focuses on Ronaldo's childhood footwear while celebrating his continued greatness on the pitch and beyond. Ballon d'Or meets playground legend.

The Nike Air Max 97 CR7 is available starting October 23 exclusively on the SNKRS App in Western Europe.
