Umbro has teamed up with Los Angeles designer Steven Mena and footwear and apparel retailer WSS for a new collaborative collection that blends classic English football heritage with the distinctive style and culture of Southeast Los Angeles.
Bringing together the aesthetics of blokecore and barrio culture, the 23-piece range reimagines traditional football fashion through a uniquely LA lens. Designed, directed and produced by Mena, the collection draws inspiration from the communities, rituals and identities that have shaped both football culture and life in Los Angeles. The result is a lineup that seamlessly bridges the gap between the pitch and the streets, offering a contemporary take on classic football apparel.
A Los Angeles-based designer, creative director and storyteller, Mena is best known as the founder of independent streetwear label MENACE, established in 2013. Raised in Southeast LA by a Nicaraguan father and Salvadoran mother, his work frequently explores themes of family, Latino identity, working-class culture and the city that raised him.
For this latest project, Mena channels those influences into a collection that honours Umbro's deep-rooted football legacy while reflecting the everyday style found across Los Angeles neighbourhoods. Jerseys, polos, denim, jackets, windbreakers and hoodies make up the expansive 23-piece offering.
The collection is rooted in the shared sense of pride found in football clubs, neighbourhoods and personal style, emphasising the cultural parallels between English football fandom and Latino communities in Southern California.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Mena explained the personal significance behind the project: “When I was designing this collection, I kept thinking about myself as a kid going into WSS and what I would've been excited to find there. I wanted to take Umbro's football heritage and put my own LA perspective into it. There's a lot of shared pride in your neighborhood, your team and how you dress. For my first collection under my own name, getting to bring those worlds together at a place I grew up shopping at makes it especially meaningful.”
For WSS, the partnership represents an opportunity to celebrate the intersection of football, fashion and community. Blanca Gonzalez, SVP and General Manager of WSS, said: “Steven has built a creative legacy by bringing the voice and style of Los Angeles to a wider audience. Together with Umbro, a brand with more than a century of football heritage, we're proud to amplify his vision and give our passionate fútbol fans a collection that connects the history of the game with how our communities live it today, through sport, style and culture.”
Through the combined perspectives of Umbro, WSS and Steven Mena, this latest collection celebrates the connections between football heritage, local identity and the communities that continue to shape the sport's evolving style narrative.
