Umbro Takes A 1990’s Design Trip With New MTV Partnership

Once again tapping into the brand’s Manchester roots for a hook up that transports your consciousness right back to the late '80s and early '90s, Umbro have announced a new partnership with iconic music video channel, MTV.

Umbro has carved a niche out of its lifestyle collaborations over recent years, tapping into not only its extensive sports archive, but also into its Manchester roots and powerful nostalgic pull to create some retro-fuelled capsules. Now the brand are at it again, this time coupling with iconic music video channel, MTV for an initial collection that riffs off the acid house days of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, celebrating a time when working class kids, football fans, and students came together in disused warehouses, abandoned office blocks and country fields to rave together to a single unifying beat.

For Spring Summer ’23, Umbro and MTV revisit the Second Summer of Love with a collection that combines casual sports-inspired silhouettes with a range of graphic prints and colours inspired by the ‘80’s and ‘90’s rave scene. 1990’s visual markers include a fusion logo that sees the MTV 'M' subbed into the Umbro wordmark, alongside a warped all-over checkerboard print. Fabrics too nod to the ‘90’s with a shell suit inspired nylon crinkle plus a polyester micro-let fabric, which has been a long-time go-to for Umbro kits and training wear.

Silhouettes throughout are slightly oversized for a genderless fit, and the collection is made up of a Coach Jacket, Hoodie, Trackpants, a Graphic T-shirt, a Football Jersey in three options, Vest, Swim Shorts, and a Bucket Hat.

The Umbo x MTV collection also extends into footwear and accessories and includes the Copley ‘Checkerboard Sneaker’, a Cap in three option, and a Waistpack bag.
