Vancouver Whitecaps Reveal & Debut Special BHM Jersey

This weekend, MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps announced the launch of a new Black History Month kit, featuring a striking design created in collaboration with acclaimed local artist Anthony Joseph. The kit was then debuted in the preseason match against FC LNZ Cherkasy.

With the 2025 MLS season right around the corner, teams are putting in the final bits of prep, gearing up for the coming campaign. As part of that, we expect to see all the new kits dropping anytime now, but Vancouver Whitecaps have kicked things off not with their expected new Primary kit, but instead with a special edition in celebration of Black History Month. The kit is designed in collaboration with celebrated local artist Anthony Joseph. A bold tribute to the rich history, culture, and contributions of the Black community, it blends striking aesthetics with powerful symbolism.

It’s been incredible to work with Vancouver Whitecaps FC on this project,” said Joseph. "With no restrictions, I could go all in on my jersey designs to create visuals that symbolise unity, pride and a celebration of Black culture. I hope it inspires open-dialogue and brings communities together.

Bringing some serious Ajax 21/22 third shirt vibes (never going to be a bad thing), the jersey’s design is a masterclass in storytelling. Joseph, known for his vibrant and thought-provoking work, infused the piece with elements reflecting both African heritage and the Black community’s impact in Vancouver and beyond. The colour palette draws from the traditional pan-African hues of red, yellow, green, and black, while intricate Kente-inspired patterns are embedded in the crest and numbering.

A standout feature sits proudly on the neckline: “Black History, Canadian History.” This powerful quote from Jean Augustine—the first Black Canadian woman to serve as a federal Minister of the Crown and Member of Parliament—emphasizes the vital role of Black history in shaping the nation’s identity.

Adding an extra layer of meaning, the jock tag features a hummingbird, Vancouver’s official city bird and a significant emblem in the Caribbean, honouring the heritage of many players.

Black heritage is deeply ingrained in the history of this club, throughout our alumni, staff, fans, partners, and media,” said Tosaint Ricketts, former Whitecaps FC player and current liaison of player and club engagement. “This is a time to recognize and celebrate those contributions, and we couldn’t be prouder to work with Anthony to bring this connection to life.

Following its reveal, the kit debuted in the club’s preseason match in Marbella, Spain against FC LNZ Cherkasy on 2 February before being given a run out again in the final preseason game against IF Brommapojkarna on 6 February. The kit will also make an appearance when the ‘Caps take on Deportivo Saprissa in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round One second leg at BC Place on 27 February.

Fans are encouraged to keep an eye out for club community initiatives to get their hands on this limited-edition piece of history.
