adidas Team Up With Star Athletes For 'You Got This' Initiative

Star athletes including Aitana Bonmatí and Trinity Rodman have come together with adidas for ‘You Got This’. This arrives as the next chapter of adidas’ global brand campaign, highlighting the importance of becoming a positive influence for athletes.

‘You Got This’ is an initiative created by adidas in order to help disarm negative pressure in sport by motivating everyone to be a positive influence. The brand have teamed up with Aitana Bonmatí, Lamine Yamal, Anthony Edwards, Jurgen Klopp, Trinity Rodman and Aliyah Boston to help use their platform to spread awareness.

In its global new study, adidas uncovered that four in five amateur athletes often experience unhelpful behaviours from the sidelines from coaches, supporters and parents, leaving a negative impact on the players. In partnership with sports psychologists and figureheads, the brand have spotlighted common behaviours that people say see as helpful but can actually act as a source of pressure and push young athletes to quit.

During their research they surveyed over 12,000 athletes across 24 countries and found a few common actions that were identified as having the most negative impact. These were: scoreboard shouting, standing back, focusing only on outcome, videogame coaching, and immediate post-game analysis.

“This latest chapter of the brand campaign aims to help motivate everyone to be a positive influence on every pitch, track and court. We set out to create a campaign to highlight how the everyday actions of those in and surrounding the game can be the difference between a young athlete showing up on the starting line or dropping out. As part of this ambition, we wanted to not only inspire coaches, parents, supporters and teammates but to also give them the tools to help athletes believe ‘You Got This’.” said Florian Alt, Vice President of Global Brand Communications at adidas, when speaking on the campaign.

Adidas have created its ‘Sideline Essentials’ using findings from their research– five positive behaviours which could help encourage up to 20 million more athletes to play sport more regularly. The advice includes practical intel on how to switch to a more positive attitude. ‘Sideline Essentials’ has been endorsed by sport superstars including Jürgen Klopp, Son Heung-min and Aitana Bonmatí.  Coaching icon, Jürgen Klopp, delivers the ‘Sideline Essentials’ and shows how coaches, parents, supporters and teammates on the sidelines can tackle the common negative behaviours. It includes positive actions which could mean the difference between a young athlete quitting or not.

Reflecting on the importance of positivity in sport and adidas’ ‘Sideline Essentials’, former manager Jurgen Klopp, said: “I’ve been in football a long time, as a player, a captain, and a manager, so I know how crucial it is to have the right support around you. A simple ‘well done’, a hand on the shoulder, a hug or a word at the right moment, can completely change a player’s mindset and as a result, their performance. Everyone needs someone to make them believe, both on and off the pitch, but the way this is articulated is so important. The advice in adidas’ ‘Sideline Essentials’ is the ideal reference point, celebrating a player should be the focus at every moment during a game and this is something I focused on when leading teams throughout my career. To get the best out of an athlete, you need to trust and motivate them, whilst also proving you will be there to support them on good days, as well as the bad days.”

To see the advice play out on pitch-side, adidas partnered up with its icons to show up for grassroot athletes on sidelines across the world. In the coming weeks, we will see some of the world’s best athletes turn up at local courts, tracks and pitches to show their support for young athletes.
