There are football shirts that live in the archives, and then there are shirts that live in pop culture. The USA’s 1994 away jersey – the infamous “denim” number – falls aggressively into the latter. It’s a design that defined a moment, and now, more than 30 years later, adidas is bringing it back.
There are a few jerseys in world football that perfectly capture a moment in time, and the USA denim shirt from the 1994 World Cup is undoubtedly one of them. With the nation hosting its first-ever World Cup, all eyes were on a burgeoning football culture – and adidas leaned fully into America’s flamboyant patriotism. Stars were splashed across this away shirt as the perfect counterpoint to the stripes of the home kit. It’s the very definition of a cult classic: not truly appreciated in its own moment, but now embraced with almost unconditional love.
The 2026 reissue retains that same wild‑at‑heart identity: a washed‑denim effect that looks ripped straight from ‘94, scattered white stars that refuse to apologise, and sharp red detailing at the collar and sleeves to remind you this is a shirt built on attitude. Only now, it’s engineered for the present. Lightweight performance fabric replaces the heavy kit of the ‘90s, bringing comfort, movement and street‑ready versatility into the conversation.
“In the U.S. Denim jersey, we set out to capture the side of American soccer that has always been distinctive and original,” explains Inigo Turner, Design Director at adidas Football. “This design leans into that spirit with bold graphics, fearless colour and a belief that the game here should look and feel like it belongs to the people.”
The jersey headlines a wider U.S. Denim Collection, building a complete capsule around the most beautifully chaotic kit in U.S. soccer history. The Denim Shorts mirror the shirt’s star‑covered print, creating a full match‑fit silhouette straight out of the ‘90s. The Denim Track Top brings contrast panelling, star graphics and hits of red at the collar and cuffs, blurring lines between retro warm‑up gear and modern‑day terracewear. Completing the drop is the Denim Cap, a cleaner, more subtle nod to the theme, finished with embroidered branding and miniature star details.
The full collection drops tomorrow, March 10 at 11am ET and will be available for purchase at adidas.com/us
