World Cup > SoccerBible World Cup Update - 16/06/10

Day 6 provided the biggest shock of the World Cup so far, as European Champions Spain were defeated 1-0 by Switzerland!

Despite Spain enjoying the majority of possession and creating the better chances, Switzerland were a resilient and determined side. The Swiss deserved their goal, which was scrambled over the line, based on their work rate and organisation, but the Spanish will surely be reeling after such a surprise loss.

There's been plenty to discuss at the World Cup, along with some interesting boot spottings, some great team play and plenty to look forward to. Check out the SoccerBible's view on the latest goings on in South Africa...

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)
Nike Elite Superfly II

Didier Drogba (Ivory Coast)
Nike Elite Superfly II

Nike Elite Vapor Superfly II football boots dominated the headlines with a variety of sole-plates on show. Cristiano Ronaldo for some time now has preferred a mixed stud sole-plate, which he wore against Ivory Coast.

Probably the most surprising sole-plate choice is Didier Drogba's, who was wearing the carbon fibre Mercurial SL sole-plate, that he's been wearing this season with his Superfly I football boots.

Luis Fabiano (Brazil)
Nike Elite Superfly II

Hong Yong-Jo (North Korea)
adidas F50 adiZero

Luis Fabiano is choosing to wear the Superfly I sole-plate with his Elite upper, which is again another player who is happy with Nike's carbon-fibre sole-plate but is opting not to wear the NikeSense studs.

North Korean captain Yong-Jo had a unique boot choice, as he was wearing Lionel Messi's chameleon adidas adiZero football boots, which look quite striking with their white sole-plate and heel counter.

Play of the Day
has to be Robinho's pass for Elano to score Brazil's second goal. Elano didn't even need to break stride as Robinho's pass carved open the North Korean defence, it was great vision and perfectly weighted.

Flamboyant Brazilian striker Robinho was playing in Elite Superfly football boots, and despite being better known for his skill and trickery, it was a great spot to see Elano running down the outside and a fantastic pass to take out five North Korean players. Reminiscent of the South African pass, to set up the first goal of the World Cup, it could even be argued Robinho's is pass of the tournament so far.

Spain v Switzerland (Group H)

The must watch game of the day has to be European champions Spain, who take on Switzerland in Durban. Spain have won 45 of their last 48 matches and are ranked second favourite to win the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

There are a host of star players in the Spanish starting eleven, but the the player we've picked as the one to watch is Barcelona's new signing David Villa. Villa is armed with his new lightweight adidas adiZero football boots, has a great goalscoring record for Spain with 38 goals in 58 appearances, and will be leading the attacking line as Fernando Torres returns from injury.

Switzerland are without talismanic striker and captain Alexander Frei, who has been replaced by Eren Derdiyok to lead the Swiss attack. The Bayer Leverkusen striker is just 22, and has only previously scored two goals for Switzerland, but wearing the Nike Elite T90 Laser III football boots he's equipped with the same football boots a Wayne Rooney and Fernando Torres.

Will the Spanish impress us with their flowing attacking style of play, or can Switzerland break their duck and beat Spain for the first time in 19 meetings in international football?...have YOUR say and share your opinions on the World Cup!

Isn't the fact that none of the professional players use the normal superflys bad marketing? Doesn't it show that the boots themselves aren't good enough for them, so why would i buy them?

Dempsey_8_23- it may not be that der bad but you do have to realize that alot of pros will do watever to der boots to ensure they get better, even the slightest thing, so drogba prefers a different soleplate, not because the other is bad, but he just likes the other, but then again i could be wrong and they like the other ones cuz the others suk for them lol whos knows

i don't think any pro players like the NikeSense studs.  Nike should lay off the gimmicks and stick with what they're good at, things like those studs are a waste of time and money, especially if they don't even work/do the job better than usual studs.
