As club sponsors of both Man United and Liverpool, American car giants Chevrolet have added fuel to the fire of English football's fiercest rivalry with a controversial commercial that joins the forces of players from both sides.
Chevrolet hope the ad will engage a wider US audience ahead of this Sunday's high-profile EPL clash. It features a series of spliced shots with players including Giggs, Ferdinand, van Persie, Scholes, Henderson, Allen, Johson and Shelvey each delivering short mantras about what their club means to them. The commercial has sparked quite a backlash, with both sets of fans complaining about the video creating an unwanted solidarity between the two fierce rivals. Several fans have taken to Twitter to voice their disapproval. 'What the f*** is this s***?! lol', wrote @Mussiek1, while Gary Owens posted: 'What on earth were Chevrolet thinking of?' Thankfully Chevrolet thought better of pairing Suarez and Evra together!
Chevrolet have been busy with both clubs, following multi-million dollar deals with Manchester United and Liverpool. Their YouTube channel includes a wide series of #DrivenBy videos including player interviews and features from some iconic and current Manchester United and Liverpool faces.
After clinching a whopping £357million deal between now and 2021, the Chevrolet logo will be emblazoned across United's shirt from the 2014-15 season. From then United will receive $70m (£44.75m) in return for carrying the Chevrolet logo on their playing shirts. With those figures, they could get away with a lot worse in their commercials!
As for Liverpool, Chevrolet last year signed a deal with the Premier League team to become their official club car sponsor. No figures were released, but from the looks of their YouTube channel it was enough to get them great access to a number of current and ex Liverpool players! Check it out here. It's worth a look!
