Football News > Mesut Özil Makes Nike U-Turn?

Mesut Ozil has made another u-turn in what seemed to be an inevitable move to rival brand adidas. The Ozil saga took another twist at the weekend, with the Real Madrid no.10 wearing the Nike Mercurial ACC Vapor VIII.

Ozil has reportedly been a free-agent this season and has used the time to experiment with other football boots - the German international had brief spells in the Predator LZ and f50 adizero. The midfielder has now gone full circle, returning to the Mercurial Vapor VIII.

After an extended spell wearing the white-out f50 adizero miCoach, many of us expected adidas and Ozil to announce an official partnership which would see the midfielder become one of the lead faces for the new adizero line. A deal would have made sense – both Real Madrid and Germany are sponsored by the three stripes.

But it seems Nike could hold onto their man after all. Ozil was initially contracted by Nike, but declined an extension on the deal to trial other football boots. In a recent statement, the 24-year-old commented; “I appreciate the cooperation with Nike in recent years, but I now want to take my time and use the unsigned time to test different shoes.”

Have Nike finally won the race to secure Ozil's signature? Prizing one of Nike's biggest names away would have been a big win for adidas, but after weeks of deliberation the midfielder looks to be staying put – until Real Madrid's next match anyway!

Which brand do you think Ozil would be better suited with? Is he right to stay with Nike and the Mercurial Vapor VIII? Let us know. Join the conversation online, on Twitter and on Facebook.

seems fair enough, not renewing the contract so he can try others. although he has realised that nike are the best!

Adidas should let him test the new adizero.  It would make a lot more sense for him to sign with adidas

I think he's better with Nike than adidas (adidas would waste him) but I don't think he's suited to the Vapor...he's not a winger or a striker, should give the CTRs a go I think.

@10leomessi10. firstly i beat you to it. secondly why woud it 'make sense' to sign for adidas? sure germany and real madrid are both sponsored by adidas but so what? are you saying that every single real madrid player should wear adidas boots?

I think he's only testing the vapors because there are no customizations on his boot and he's wearing an Adidas sweat wristband  but it doesn't matter, with Modric now in Madrid and Kaka getting better he'll be sitting on the bench more often.

love seeing ozil in vapors again. and as for goonerman1990......he doesn't have to be a winger or striker to use vapors. and plenty of no.10's are using vapors. Eriksen, Ozil, Gotze, Modric, Mata, Hazard, etc. the purpose of the vapors is to give you a light boot with a nice touch, and it gives exactly that. ozil likes to feel light on his feet, and his touch is magical, so it's a perfect match. i hope he signs an extension with nike, not used to him in adidas. great player nonetheless! hopefully his form keeps improving!

actually swopping boots is like swopping clubs if its from nike to addidas or addidas to nike and is as bad as going from madrid to barca or barca to madrid.

What's all the talk about liking the boots better than the Adidas ones. The players just go for the boot manufactor who gives them the most money

He's probably only wearing them because of the clause in his contract with Nike. He has to wear Nike for 180 days or wear unbranded boots. Personally i'd wear Nike over unbranded boots.
