As the original superstar of speed, the Nike Mercurial Vapor has been at the pinnacle of the game for over a decade. Now Nike Football continue to push the boundaries of one of the world's most iconic football boots, with the ground breaking release of the massively hyped Vapor VIII.

SoccerBible sat down exclusively with Nike's UK Product Insider Chris Tyler, to bring you an industry-inside look into one of the biggest football boot releases of 2012. In part one-of-five in this mini-series, Chris discusses what makes the Mercurial range so iconic as well as the performance focus of the Vapor VIII.

For the 2012/13 season the Mercurial Vapor takes performance innovation to the next level with a totally re-engineered boot built for explosive speed. The new Nike Mercurial Vapor VIII football boots deliver the ultimate in fit, touch and traction. A combination that has established the Mercurial as one of the greatest speed boots of all time.

Speaking on the excitement surrounding the new Vapor VIII; ''It's a shoe which excites our consumer. It's a shoe which stimulates discussion on forums and blogs, because it's a shoe which has constantly pushed boundaries and pioneered new technologies.''

''There's a constant flow of innovation and evolution in the Mercurial range. Each generation is about two years in the making when you consider the research and insights that the product creation team carry out. Their inspiration comes from listening to the players, and they challenge themselves to deliver a new level of explosive speed with each shoe.''

I've always hated the name "Mercurial" because either you're correcting someone when they're saying it or someone is correcting you. . . . Mecur-deez-nutz. . .

SoccerBible... how in any way is this a "ground breaking release"???

The boots offer nothing new/innovative - massive let down from Nike.

@PhilV I seriously hope you're kidding. There are more changes with these than there was with the adizero micoach. All Adidas did was add sprintweb and micoach capability which is an extra $70 for the chip. Nike made the vapor lighter, changed the soleplate, made the upper softer, and changed the insole. It's new/innovative because it hasn't been done before which is basically the definition of both words, haters these days....

I have to agree with PhilV...the guy in the video is talking absolute nonsense.  They'd be better admitting that for the last 3 years they've been pushing gimmick technologies and now they've just removed them because nobody believes in it anymore.  Johnny23 - Nike haven't innovated, they've just decided to catch up with the rest of the boot world! Fact!!

would love to hit the player who gave the feedback for sense studs to be made... nike's intention was very good, the execution horrible. plus its ine of the reasons for jacking up to a 200 quid price tag.

@Waldrinho I've always known them as Vapors.  My younger brother calls them mercurials and it *** me off, it just sounds really stupid

what is the difference between the vapor and the Pro?

March 21, 2012 5:14 PM

Mercurial1 said:

@Footymad12 The pro consists of a mix of SG and FG, which is the soleplate most superfly/vapor wearers used including Ronaldo, Drogba, Neymar. Pretty much "Pro" because it is what the pros would get in their SG boots.

the color of thee vapors remind me of yogurt. and Nike

should should make all of their boots black and blue

like they did for the euro cup back in 2008. Some leather vapors should be nice too

I just dont know but from all previous Vapors these particular having this soleplate to me that is not a lasting boot but What make me more worry about are the heel studs those unique 2 studs are to me not for a firm ground shoe more like a softground. I personally dont like soft ground soleplates cuz they make more stud pressure on the heel and afterward your knee is gonna suffer.

I really like vapor 7. Not getting these vapors

Erm, might be wrong but  thought the V1.06 pioneered lightweight speed boots, no?? (puma)

Don't beleive the hype, Nike would have you believe they pioneered everything!!

The new CTR's are nasty! Nasty as in F'ing sweet... If you're not happy with the colors of the new Vapor, just get in nikeid and make your own. The new ones are already there and you can even do them with the safari pattern on the upper.  Quitchyerbitching and get something different if you don't like them that damn much...

what should i get the vapors, adizero micoach or nike T90's. any help

Johnny23 said:

@TheDoc You just contradicted yourself. According to you Nike has not innovated but instead has decided to catch up. Im guessing you are referring to catching up to adidas? If the adiZero micoach was something new how can Nike catch up without having to innovate the Mercurial line? Adidas tries to sell you the idea that a lighter boot makes you faster and people honestly believe that a few grams/oz will make a huge different haha.
