Football News > SoccerBible Debate - Can Manchester City win the Premier league? - 13/01/10

Nigel de Jong is the latest player to publicly claim
Manchester City can still win the title, following a resurgence under new boss Roberto Mancini. But do you think Man City can win the Premier League?

This season Manchester City have proven to be one of the most ambitious clubs in the Premier League, and their Dubai owners have shown they are not shy to spend some cash in their quest to win the title.

But following a poor start to the season, Manchester City's audacious claims they would push for the league seemed to have faltered. That is until new manager Roberto Mancini guided City to four wins in four Premier League games, leaving them just seven points behind leaders Chelsea. So, realistically can Manchester City still win the Premier League?

NIGEL DE JONG (Manchester City player) - "Of course the title is a possibility. Nothing is impossible. Though nothing is impossible, you have to work for it. You have to be realistic as well and remember this is only season No.1 for us after the big spending and we have to take it step by step."

ROBERTO MANCINI (Manchester City manager) - "Now is not the time to look at our league position. We will just play one game at a time and then we will look at the table in two months. Can we win the league? All is realistic. We have another 18 games to go so all is possible because we have a good team."

PATRICK VIEIRA (Manchester City player) - "Now that I am back, I want to win the Premier League and I think we can do it this season. We are not too far behind because at Arsenal, we won the league when we were 15 points behind at Christmas, so anything is possible...Why do I believe we can win the league? Because I don't believe there is another team in the Premier League that has the quality of strikers that we have."

JAMIE PACHECO (Betfair) - "Winning the Premier League this year may be a season too early, though I do seriously consider them lifting the Carling Cup though. Any sort of silverware this year will be proof that genuine progress is being made at Eastlands."

SIR ALEX FERGUSON (Manchester United manager) - "It's going to be very difficult for them to win the league when you see ourselves, Chelsea and Arsenal because they've got to beat the four of us at some point to get the league. It's very difficult to get into the top four and it's even more difficult to get into the top one - and that's what this league is all about, being No. 1."

I'm getting mixed feeling since mancini joind the circus..but i totally agree with u FA Cup Glory's statement..I think if they bring more world class players in the right area, surely they will be true challengers for the title "next year". If we look back at chelsea a few years back, they already had quality world class players but never managed to break through as title challangers, (still with chelsea)but with a mixture of ($$$) old and new quality players balance, and not making too much drastic changes (As on Jose Mourinho reign) the managed to be a power fulhousehold name in football...For me Aston villa and tottenham (If they had the billions) would instead be true tittle challangers bcoz they already had the quality in their squad and don't have to do much...BUT this year I'm feeling it's another 2 horse race between my beloved MAN UTD!!! and chelski..

Doubt they'll win it this year or maybe next year. They have a good squad but some of them just cant play together. Maybe could win some of the cup competitions but definetly not the premier league, breaking the top 4 is a possibility, cant see liverpool in the top 4 this year!!

They can anything is possible really 4 straight wins and chelsea and man utd are playin like crap rite now to tell the truth. In all honesty, I either see man city, arsenal (the most likely), aston villa (such a great season), or chelsea being number 1, but this is my top 4, Man Utd suck without Ronaldo, but hey anything can happen. Always keep that in mind.

I think they'll get like 4th or 3rd.. The players need to get used to eachother and play the same game, but next year this is gonna be hell of a game from them, at least that;s what I think :p

I think there is a shift of power taking place in the Premiership at the moment. Man City are definately on the rise and they will only get stronger now and in the next few seasons. Man Utd an Liverpool are on the decline, both teams are struggling through this season and have massive debts. In a year from now we certainly could be talking about Man City winning the title.

Overall its a sad state of affairs that money is the main cause of success and failure in the modern game of football.

Um, people, don't write off man utd just yet, they have quality players and usually they bounce back greatly at the end of the season, judging from all the managers, sir Alex is the most experienced of them all, hes bigger among the other managers and utd can live without twinkle toes primadona cr9, as off david beckham and eric cantona..I see utd bounce back and seeing them to be at the top 3 for a far long years to for this season, I still stand tall that its a two horse race man utd chelsea all the way...thats a fact to be true!!!! face the damn reality..
