Here at SoccerBible, we've officially opened the doors to our Kit Vault! We'll aim to showcase the best retro football shirts from years gone by to our SoccerBible community. To kick things off we take a look at the Manchester United home shirt from the 1992-93 seasons...

This shirt was the first Umbro produced Manchester United kit after 12 years of adidas production. The jersey featured a lace-up white collar along with a club badge that was made larger than ever before. To deter counterfeits, the Umbro logo was subtly incorporated into the pattern of the shirt.

Influenced by strips from the 1930's, this shirt was made famous by the arrival of Eric Cantona to Old Trafford from Leeds. A Manchester United legend, Cantona became as famous for his football as he did for wearing his shirt collar up.

United experienced successful seasons wearing this shirt, claiming the first ever 1992/93 Premier League trophy for the first time in 26 years. Following this, they went on to win the 1993/94 double which included a 4-0 hammering of rivals Chelsea!

When you rattle through the list of famous players that wore this shirt, you're reminded of some of the legends that have passed through Manchester United over the years. The names included the likes of; Cantona, Ince, Hughes, Bruce, Keane, Sharpe, Giggs, McClair, Irwin, Pallister, Parker, Blackmore, Kanchelskis and more!

The first year of this shirt also marked the beginning of the English Premier League. When the 1991-92 season came to a close, the First Division clubs withdrew from the Football League to form the Premier League under the supervision of the FA. It was these years when football kits began to take on more of a fashion element with complicated detailing and patterns woven into the fabric. It was the first time that players names were introduced on the back of the shirts and competition patches were sewn onto the sleeves.

Manchester United Away 10/11 Nike Football Shirt

Introducing the new Manchester United Away kit for 2010-11 season, combining club history with new age technology from Nike. Check out our full reveal of the new football kit now!

Following on from the release of the new Nike home shirt, the club’s Away Shirt for this season is white with a black and red trim – complimented by a bold chevron print on the sleeves. There have been glimpses of the new kit on the internet for weeks and months, but only now we can share these official images for United's new kit - one we're sure will cause plenty of debate!

The jersey’s new double knit structure gives it a sleeker appearance, while offering 10% more stretch, and also boasts a new dynamic fit, cut to follow the natural contours of the body while allowing for maximum airflow and movement.

Aon, the new shirt sponsor, features on the front of the shirt. Whilst inside the shirt on the back of the club crest is the clubs mantra “Believe”. The message sits right next to the heart revealing every Manchester United fans’ Inner Pride while the symbolic Red Devil sits on the sleeve of the shirt and the shorts to add the finishing touches to the kit.

Manchester United defender Patrice Evra said of the new shirt: “It’s really nice and very comfortable and I hope we can win every trophy in this shirt. I like how Nike has put the word ‘believe’ on the inside of the crest. You always have to respect the Manchester United shirt and I hope we will enjoy a lot of success in this one.”

Nike’s ‘Considered Design’ programme, aims to create performance products that minimise environmental impact by reducing waste during the design and development process, use environmentally preferred materials, and eliminate toxics.

“As we look at how we design and develop products and run our global business, it’s not enough to be solving the challenges of today,” comments Nike spokesman Charlie Brooks. “We are designing for the sustainable economy of tomorrow, and for us that means using fewer resources, more sustainable materials and renewable energy to produce new products. We’re proud to be a sponsor of Manchester United and to help them achieve their environmental goals.”

To make the kits, Nike uses discarded water bottles destined for landfill sites in Japan and Taiwan, where they can take up to 500 years to decompose. This saves precious raw materials and reduces energy consumption by up to 30% compared to conventional fabrics. Use of recycled polyester across its new range of club kits means Nike has saved nearly 13 million plastic water bottles, a total of around 254,000 kg of polyester waste

Nike's accompaning imagery for the launch of the new 10/11 Manchester United Away Football Kit features some great player montages, including Nike endorsees Rio Ferdinand, Nani, Wayne Rooney and interestingly Darren Fletcher (possibly too late to substitute the recent adidas convert....?). The inspiration for these great montages is again to convey the the passion, energy, drama and emotions endured by a Manchester United player over 90 minutes.

Considering the environment doesn’t mean sacrificing the renowned high performance of Nike’s kits, and the new Manchester United away strip has been engineered to give players a greater competitive advantage than ever before, keeping players drier and more comfortable, allowing them to maintain their optimum body temperature and perform at their peak on the pitch.

The improved Nike Dri-Fit fabric, now 13% lighter than previous kits, helps to quickly evaporate moisture by drawing through the fabric to the surface and keep players dry.

There's plenty more tech in the shirt too. Innovative ventilation zones are placed along each side of the jersey to enhance breathability, by up to 7% compared to previous kits, and allow air to pass across the whole torso. These zones have up to 200 tiny laser cut holes, backed by Nike’s halo application which prevents ripping without reducing air flow. An additional ventilation zone is placed below the waistband on the shorts at the base of the spine.

The shirt is matched with black shorts and white/black socks with red trim, a strip most likely to be worn at away stadiums including Anfield and the Emirates this coming season.

The brand new Manchester United Away Shirt 10/11 looks set to become a firm favourite with the fans. Here are the first official images of the brand new Manchester United Away Kit for 2009/10, released by Nike ahead of the full kit launch on August 13th.

The new Manchester United Away football shirt follows the same design as the Manchester United home shirt we unveiled on June 26th. Featuring a large chevron across the chest, which echoes the same pattern United wore on their shirts during the 1909-10 season when Old Trafford first opened. The distinctive angle of the chevron also directly replicates the one found at the bottom of the club crest containing United's red devil.

The new Manchester United 09/10 football kits celebrate Old Trafford's 100th Anniversary. United have a glorious history at Old Trafford, it is a ground where they continue to strike fear in to visiting teams. And the chevron design of the new Manchester United football shirts augment the upper chest area of the shirt, to give United players an even bigger and more intimidating appearance!

United's all action midfielder Ji-Sung Park hopes the chevron design can inspire them to an unbeaten campaign: "I like to think of it as 'V' for victory and hopefully we can win every game we play in the new kits!

The new Manchester United 09/10 away shirt has a number of new design elements. The entire back of the shirt has an engineered mesh, which is a series of small chevrons, a performance feature to offer players even greater ventilation during games. And the shirt is made from Nike Dri-Fit fabric, which keeps players drier, cooler and lighter by drawing sweat from the body to the fabric's surface.

The shirt is finished with a small label engineered in to the side seam that reads ‘The Theatre of Dreams Since 1910'.

The new Nike Manchester United home shirt has been designed and inspired by the 'Theatre of Dreams', as Old Trafford celebrates its centenary year. The new football shirt features a large chevron across the chest, which echoes the same pattern United wore on their shirts during the 1909/10 season when Old Trafford first opened.

After seeing the new Manchester United home kit Rio Ferdinand stated: "I’m sure we’ll all be buzzing when we run out in the new kit next season. Maintaining the traditions of the club is very important. Last season we had the blue kit to remember the European Cup winners of 1968 and this one dates back to the 1900s to celebrate 100 years of Old Trafford. This club has always taken pride in its history - it acts as an inspiration to all of us and it’s great to see it represented in the new kits.”

Manchester United have lifted an astonishing twenty major trophies in the last twenty seasons, an incredible run based largely on their dominant form at Old Trafford. A run they will be looking to continue, wearing a shirt that displaying a 'V for victory'.

We will see the new Manchester United 09/10 home shirts first worn by United stars Rooney, Ferdinand and Berbatov on the clubs pre-season tour of Asia that begins on 16th July. The same date the shirt will be available from, although it is currently available on pre-order.
